Baby is considered full term from this week. All systems are complete. Breathing is being practised regularly. Baby is crying silently, sucking, blinking, and practising the skills needed for life outside. The grasp reflex is firm and strong. The brain and lungs continue to mature slightly until 40 weeks, but at 37 weeks, the risk of complications from early delivery is very low. Baby is gaining about 200–250g per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of early labour?

Early labour signs include: a show (mucus plug, possibly blood-tinged), irregular mild contractions that gradually become more regular, lower back pain, loose stools, restlessness, and an inability to sleep. Active labour is characterised by contractions every 3–5 minutes lasting 45–60 seconds, increasing in intensity. Waters may break at any point before or during labour.

Should I eat a big meal before going to hospital?

Eating lightly in early labour is generally fine and helps maintain energy. Opt for easy-to-digest foods like toast, crackers, yoghurt, or fruit. Avoid a large heavy meal, as nausea and vomiting are common in active labour. Your hospital may have guidelines about eating once you're admitted — ask at your birth plan appointment.
